Wet winters and surfaces that never dry out

Tasmania's drainage problem isn't storm intensity so much as persistence. Winter rain keeps arriving, evaporation is low, and flat paved areas sit wet for weeks. That's how you get moss, slip hazards and water tracking toward a slab edge or a garage door. Permeable concrete removes the surface film entirely. Water goes down through the pavement into an open-graded base instead of running across the top looking for a low point.

Councils here expect stormwater to be managed on site, and older parts of Hobart and Launceston sit on drainage networks that were never built for today's roof and paving areas. Reducing what leaves the property is often easier and tidier than trying to add capacity downstream.

Cold weather, steep sites, real logistics

The freeze concern comes up in the highlands, and it's largely a myth for a properly drained system. Water doesn't sit in the voids long enough to do damage; the base drains it away. What does matter is fall and edge detail on Tasmania's steep blocks, where the base has to be stepped or checked so stored water doesn't simply migrate downhill inside the pavement.
