What we poured

One slab. No joints anywhere in it. We use our standard 25+ MPa mix over a base of clean screenings. That base does the work: it stores the rain and lets it soak into the ground below.

What the centre needed

A wet yard is a closed yard. That's the whole problem in one line: the surface can't pool after rain or catch a small foot. Standard concrete holds up fine underfoot, but does nothing for the puddles. Loose-fill surfacing handles the puddles, more or less, right up until a toddler catches a toe on a low patch and goes down. A centre full of children, every day, for years, needed something that did both jobs at once.

How a permeable concrete playground performs

Numbers first. Rain moves through the surface at 8,000 to 10,000 mm/hr, straight into the base, so the yard isn't out of action for long after a downpour. Grip matters just as much: the finish carries a P4 slip rating, the same texture from one edge of the play zone to the other. There's a 10-year structural warranty on the slab, and nothing in it to rock or lift, because there are no joints to begin with. What lands on this yard soaks away on site instead of heading for the street, which is the detail a council actually cares about.

Looking after it

Not much to it. Once a month: walk it, clear the leaves and sand and any soil off it. Once a year: give it a real sweep. Gone slow in a patch? A wash sorts it.

Planning your own centre upgrade

Flooding yard. Ageing surface. Loose pavers already lifting. Upgrade pencilled in for next year. Any one of those is reason enough to put a permeable concrete playground on the brief for the next job. It gives you a slab that takes daily traffic and manages water on the same footprint, without extra drainage bolted on around the play equipment.
